Rest in Peace friend

On March 13th, 2010 Oakland lost another youth to gun violence. Eric Toscano was a friend of many youth in our program. Celina Lopez immediately contacted facilitator Kristi Holohan and with the help of Square 1 Labs heat press (Rom Pragassa), our program made a shirt in memory of Eric.

We deeply feel the loss of Eric and our hearts go out to his family and friends. Please contact our program (ace.arts.eastbay@gmail.com) to give to the family in their time of need.

In addition, as a program we will speak out against violence in our community and work for more opportunities and events for Oakland as a form of violence prevention.

In Aurelio's Perez (Street Style MetWest) words, "Today in Street Styles class Chelsea Fadda came in and started teaching us how to weave a pillow. this was very fun because we got to get hands on and got to learn the pattern on how to weave. Chelsea explained step by step how to weave and it was easy. This was a very fun activity and we want to do this again!!!"

First Friday March Photo Shoot

We had the pleasure to have photographer Stuart Dixon and make-up artist and Dream Seams participant Veronica Sandolval come out to work with models from Street Style and Dream Seams. In attendance for modeling were: Berenice, Liliana, Yadira, Celina, Allison, Haley, and Nancy. Marisel assisted in styling and Naima focused on a live sewing demonstration.

The evening in the words of Berenice
"Me and the other models thought that it was a great opportunity to have a photo shoot during the First Friday Art Murmur. It was a really good experience. We were all in a small room changing and putting on makeup, getting ready to take pictures in front of alot of people and it was great!"

Naima, who tended the machine stated, "It was very cold and rather mild but a family friendly enviornment"

Yadira said she enjoyed the fact that there were so many people taking pictures of her. The makeup was amazing, although we could have had two Veronicas it was so very time consuming. It was a real modeling experience.
