In Aurelio's Perez (Street Style MetWest) words, "Today in Street Styles class Chelsea Fadda came in and started teaching us how to weave a pillow. this was very fun because we got to get hands on and got to learn the pattern on how to weave. Chelsea explained step by step how to weave and it was easy. This was a very fun activity and we want to do this again!!!"

First Friday March Photo Shoot

We had the pleasure to have photographer Stuart Dixon and make-up artist and Dream Seams participant Veronica Sandolval come out to work with models from Street Style and Dream Seams. In attendance for modeling were: Berenice, Liliana, Yadira, Celina, Allison, Haley, and Nancy. Marisel assisted in styling and Naima focused on a live sewing demonstration.

The evening in the words of Berenice
"Me and the other models thought that it was a great opportunity to have a photo shoot during the First Friday Art Murmur. It was a really good experience. We were all in a small room changing and putting on makeup, getting ready to take pictures in front of alot of people and it was great!"

Naima, who tended the machine stated, "It was very cold and rather mild but a family friendly enviornment"

Yadira said she enjoyed the fact that there were so many people taking pictures of her. The makeup was amazing, although we could have had two Veronicas it was so very time consuming. It was a real modeling experience.

Bay Peace Event with MetWest Participants

Last Wednesday students from the MetWest addition of Street Style modeled informative military garments to expose the dangers and reality of military recruitment for high school students in Oakland. We even saw Tassafaronga Dream Seams Youth Designer Cara He in the audience.

Below models: Celina, Berenice, Olivia (organizer) and Yadira were assisted by Marisel (not pictured) in  modeling garments created by the Women of Color Resource Center (as well as one garment created by facilitator Kristi Holohan).

The event in the words of Celina:
"For it being short notice, I thought we pulled it off. We did not know what we were modeling, what song we were modeling to, who was doing hair and make-up and where we were walking. Luckily the other models were talented and helped one another with make-up. When it was time to get up on that stage, we WORKED IT! It went very well and the croud went wild! It seemed like they enjoyed the performance. It was great to be able to help out one of our peers by participating in this event. It was also great to be a part of this event because the issue they were addressing is an important issue."

Milliner Visits RPSC and Tassa

Elwyn Crawford of O'Lover Hats came to our program at both Rock Paper Scissors Collective as well as at Tassafaronga to teach hat making. We're creating berets and we look forward to hosting Elwyn again for another class. You can see some of Elwyn's Work at www.oloverhats.com
Experience in the words of youth designer Alayah Le'shay Johnson:
"As a class, we had a discussion with Elwyn-who is a milliner in the Bay Area. We had a demo on how to create berets and different ways to wear them.

We Started out by choosing fabric and cutting out all needed pieces (from a pattern) and took head measurements. Once finished, we all began sewing and creating amazing, stylish berets."

Press Release for March 5th First Friday

Our Press Focused class in the words of youth designer Liliana Herrera:
The Press Release class was very interesting and informative. I personally learned a few things about writing a press release and the requirements necessary for calling the press out for events like for our program's participation with Alameda Office of Arts Education-Arts is Education Month.
